Suddenly Nationalist Citizens Party of India has started being discussed the most in the politics of West Bengal. No candidate of this party has won the assembly elections so far, but soon this party may have 20 MPs. In such a situation, this party will make its mark at the national level, whereas till two days ago no one even knew that there was a party with this name. Here we are telling about it.

NCPI has presence in north eastern states like West Bengal, Assam and Tripura. There is also a party named NCP in Bangladesh, but it has no relation with NCPI. This party has nothing to do with Sharad Pawar or Ajit Pawar’s NCP. NCP of Bangladesh is a party formed from the student movement in 2025. At the same time, Sharad Pawar’s NCP was formed years ago after breaking away from Congress.

Shantanu Dey’s reaction on merger of TMC MLAs

On the merger of 20 TMC MPs with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, party founder and national organizing secretary Shantanu Dey said, “This morning, an online meeting of our party leaders was held and we welcomed it. Till now, I used to take all decisions about the party, but after consulting party members. I called Shewali Kundu several times, but she said she was busy. Her husband, who was the party treasurer, The phone number has been switched off. After 2025, we wanted to run the party. I have been working for the party since 2022.”

Nationalist Citizens Party formed in 2022

According to Election Commission records, Nationalist Citizens Party of India is registered as an unrecognized political party from 2022. As soon as a party contests elections and achieves the required vote share. Similarly his status is changed.

Assembly elections contested in 2023

Even people who closely follow the politics of Tripura are not able to give much information about the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. The reason for this is that this party was very anonymous. Leave alone winning the election and campaigning vigorously, no candidate of the party has been able to garner many votes through NOTA. In the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections, NCPI candidates contested 2 seats, but suffered a crushing defeat in all. According to reports, this party is strengthening itself in Meghalaya also. At the same time, suddenly a third big party is going to be formed in West Bengal.

Who are the big leaders of the party?

The President of Nationalist Citizens Party of India is Shewali Kundu. He is an advocate in the Calcutta High Court. Apart from this, Salkat Das is the general secretary of the party and Sudam Jetty is its treasurer. Sheveli’s husband Uttiya Kundu is also the vice president of the party. He is a teacher by profession. In 2023, NCPI had fielded its candidates from Chavmanu seat in Dhalai district of Tripura, Kailashahar seat in Unakoti district, Ambassa and Karamchara seat. The candidature of two of these candidates was cancelled. While contesting on Chavmanu and Kailashahar seats, the party’s candidates got a total of 822 votes (0.03 percent).

Slogan was made against defection

The interesting thing is that the party had made a slogan against defection during the 2023 assembly elections. It said “Reject political turncoats to protect your rights.” The party’s election poster also said, “To protect our rights, reject political turncoats. Support social workers, not political figures.” However, now this party has come into limelight only because of the biggest defection of current times in West Bengal.

Party leaders surprised by defection

Barjeda, who was the party’s candidate from Chavmanu Tripura, appeared surprised by the defection developments. He said, “I had contested the elections in 2023. Now how did all this happen after three years? Barjeda could not believe it after hearing the news of 20 Lok Sabha members merging with NCPI. He was surprised that the party whose name is now a topic of discussion in national political circles had once fielded him as a candidate in the Tripura Assembly elections. Barjeda told that he is a daily wage labourer. He said, “In 2023, a person named Krishna Debbarma contacted me. On his insistence I contested the elections. Many years ago I was a Congress supporter.” However, Krishna Debbarma could not be contacted. According to Barjeda’s election affidavit, he was 62 years old in 2023. He had studied up to class eight, declared assets worth Rs 4 lakh and mentioned social service as his profession.

Chavmanu got 36 votes more than NOTA

Shambhu Lal Chakma of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was victorious on Chavmanu seat. He defeated Hangsa Kumar Tripura of Tipra Motha by a margin of 2,899 votes. Barjeda stood fifth with 536 votes and was ahead by a slight margin of 500 votes on ‘NOTA’. Other candidates of the party were in the fray from Ambassa, Karamchara and Kailashahar seats. Of these, Karamchara and Ambassa seats went to Tipra Motha, while Congress won from Kailashahar.
