Supreme Court will get 5 new judges, Central Government approved, one post still vacant

The Supreme Court has got five new judges. Soon all these judges will assume their posts. Five new judges were appointed on Monday. With this the number of judges in the Supreme Court increased to 37. However, the seat of one judge is still vacant in the Supreme Court, because according to the new law, there can be a maximum of 38 judges in the Supreme Court. The Justice Department of the Union Law Ministry issued separate notifications on Monday morning informing about the appointment of five new judges.

Senior Supreme Court advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Shri Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court Sanjeev Sachdeva and Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Arun Palli have been appointed judges of the Supreme Court. After he takes oath and assumes office, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will formally become 37.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal wrote on Twitter that the President of India has approved the appointment of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court under Article 124(2) of the Constitution.

The collegium had recommended on May 27

The government had last month issued an ordinance to amend a law, increasing the sanctioned strength of judges in the apex court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. There were already two vacancies in the court. After increasing the sanctioned strength, a total of six posts had become vacant in the apex court. There will be one vacancy in the Supreme Court after five appointments on Monday. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended these five names on May 27 and the appointments were made within four days.

Pending cases expected to reduce

The purpose of this expansion is to reduce the increasing number of cases pending in the Supreme Court and to enable the formation of more regular constitution benches. It is expected that these new appointments will strengthen the capacity of the Court and will also reflect aspects of seniority, merit, regional representation and gender diversity in judicial appointments.
