Big update on Green and English’s injury before the second test, Australia faces challenge to choose playing XI

5 Min Read

Australia has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series by registering a spectacular 214-run win in the first Test against South Africa, but now the team’s problems seem to be increasing before the second match. The return of star all-rounder Cameron Green, who is suffering from injury, is not certain yet. At the same time, there have been some relief signs regarding the fitness of wicketkeeper Josh English. Along with the availability of these two players in the second test, everyone’s eyes will also be on Australia’s batting order.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has made it clear that Green will have to undergo some more necessary tests and practice sessions before declaring him fit for the second Test. The second Test between South Africa and Australia will be played at St. George’s Park in Gkebarha from Sunday, October 18. Green was out of the first Test played in Durban due to an abdominal muscle injury. The Australian team was hopeful that he would be fit by the second match, but at present no final decision has been taken regarding his return. MacDonald said Green’s recovery is going well. He will have to go through some more things in the next three-four days. After this their condition will be assessed. In soft tissue injuries, the speed of recovery can also suddenly increase.

Relief regarding the return of English

Josh Inglis’s chances of comeback look better than Green’s. He missed the first Test due to a finger injury he suffered during the ODI series against South Africa last month. However, he has recently practiced batting in the nets. According to McDonald, Inglis had a few practice sessions in the nets during lunch and had a good experience. Now it remains to be seen how comfortable he feels while batting with the splint on his finger. After reaching Gkebarha, he will have some more practice sessions, which will clear the picture regarding his fitness.

Cooper Connolly’s luck may also open

Cooper Connolly’s name can also be considered for the second test. He was out of the first test. His off-spin bowling can prove important for Australia. Even if Green returns to the team as a batsman, he will not be able to bowl in South Africa. In such a situation, Australia may feel the need of an additional spin option while deciding the balance of the team. Connolly’s claim may be stronger for this reason. However, the situation regarding the place of Nick Maddinson and Beau Webster in the playing-11 is also not clear. It is noteworthy that after the 214-run victory in the first Test, Australia is now eyeing to strengthen its lead in the series. The second Test will be played in Gkebarha from 18 to 22 October, while the third and final match of the series will be played in Cape Town from 27 to 31 October.
