National Security Guard or NSG, also known as Black Cat Commando, is a special anti-terrorism force of India. The main objective of this force, under the Union Home Ministry, is to be specially trained and operationally ready to deal with terrorist incidents, hostage crises and extraordinary security challenges. NSG, established on 16 October 1985, is celebrating its 42nd Raising Day on Friday. Its motto is Best Security Everywhere. NSG has been prepared for special operations. Its key capabilities include counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue, dealing with hijackings and neutralizing explosive threats.
Key Operational Structure of NSG
NSG has two major operational groups – Special Action Group i.e. SAG and Special Ranger Group i.e. SRG.
- The first is Special Action Group (SAG). It mainly consists of personnel selected from the Indian Army. Its primary function is to conduct high-risk counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue and special operations.
- The second is Special Ranger Group (SRG). It consists of personnel deputed from the Central Armed Police Forces i.e. CAPFs. They contribute to assigned special operations and security responsibilities.
- Apart from this, NSG also has specialist capabilities related to bomb disposal and counter-IED. Its bomb disposal units are trained to deal with threats posed by explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
NSG is also called Black Cat Commando.
National Bomb Data Center
NSG’s National Bomb Data Center i.e. NBDC is located in Manesar. Its major role is to collect information related to bomb blasts, conduct technical analysis of incidents and provide expert assistance in post-explosion investigations. The work of this center is also important in understanding the patterns and technical aspects associated with explosive events.
NSG training and support system
NSG’s capability is not limited to commando operations only. Arrangements such as special training, technical support, communications, medical, engineering and logistics are also part of its operational preparedness.
NSG’s role is important in security challenges.
NSG regional hubs across the country
NSG is headquartered in Manesar, Haryana. Its regional hubs have been created to strengthen response capacity during specific security crises in different parts of the country. NSG regional hubs have been established in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Gujarat and Jammu. Other than this Steps have also been taken towards setting up a new hub in Ayodhya. Official confirmation of the current operational status of Ayodhya Hub is required. The objective of these regional hubs is to strengthen the availability of NSG and coordination with concerned agencies during serious terrorist incidents or special security crises in different parts of the country.
Changing security challenges and role of NSG
Changing terrorist threats, the use of explosive devices, drone risks and complex urban environments are presenting new challenges to special forces. In such a situation, modern training, technical capability, joint exercises and rapid coordination are important aspects of NSG preparation. On the 42nd Raising Day, there will be special focus on the establishment of NSG, special training, operational capability and its role in the security of the country.
