Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated five development projects worth about Rs 3,350 crore in Ladakh through video conferencing. The most prominent of these projects is the 298 km long Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, which the Prime Minister dedicated to the nation. This road will provide an alternative connectivity route to Ladakh.
Let us tell you that the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has constructed the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road. This road connects Nimmu in Leh to Darcha in Himachal Pradesh via Zanskar Valley. It provides an alternative route to the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways. This road passing through the challenging terrain of the Himalayas and Shinkun La Pass is important from engineering point of view. With its commencement, the movement of armed forces and supply of essential goods can be strengthened. Apart from this, people living in Zanskar Valley will be helped in accessing health services, education, markets and other essential facilities.
Leh Airport gets new terminal building
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochi Airport in Leh, completed at a cost of Rs 640 crore. Spread over 23,800 square meters, this terminal has been designed keeping in mind the needs of 35 lakh passengers annually. Along with modern passenger facilities, a glimpse of the cultural heritage of Ladakh will also be seen in the new building. Geothermal energy has been used in the terminal to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
Emphasis also on strengthening the power system
These five projects also include schemes related to energy sector. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 9 MW capacity Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66 KV double-circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi transmission line. These projects aim to strengthen the power supply infrastructure and enhance the reliability of the electricity network in Ladakh. The use of hydropower resources can also help boost the region’s renewable energy potential.
Focus on transport, energy and water security
These five projects, worth about Rs 3,350 crore, aim to improve transportation systems, energy infrastructure, conservation of cultural heritage and water security in Ladakh. In a region with difficult geographical conditions, a robust power system with better road and air connectivity is vital for both the needs of local residents and strategic needs.
