Three prisoners lodged in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi Central Jail escaped from the jail at 4:30 am on Tuesday. Subsequently, eight jail officials were suspended pending the completion of the investigation for dereliction of duty. The escaped prisoners include Mastan of Islampur village in Basavakalyan taluk, Santosh Basappa of Santpur village in Aurad taluk and Sagar Bhimraya of Bakchodi village in Bidar taluk. They were serving life sentences for different crimes. Mastan and Santosh were convicted in separate cases under the POCSO Act, and Sagar was convicted in the murder case.
A prisoner arrested after encounter
Of these, a convicted prisoner named Santosh was arrested this morning after an encounter near Humnabad in Bidar district. Bidar District Police had received information that Santosh was hiding somewhere near Humnabad. When the police team reached there to arrest him, he suddenly attacked the police party, after which the police arrested him by shooting him below his knee.
Prisoners released from public transport bus
According to reports, after escaping from the jail, two of the three prisoners went from Kalaburagi to Humnabad by public transport bus. Police had set up a checkpoint on the outskirts of Humnabad and were checking vehicles. When the prisoners saw the police, they allegedly tried to flee towards the industrial area, following which an encounter took place and one prisoner was arrested.
How did the prisoners escape from jail?

According to sources, the prisoners used ladders to climb the compound wall. While climbing out after crossing the fence with electric wires, he used a rope made of T-shirt and towel to jump down and escape. Police said that the jail escape incident took place between 4 am and 4.30 am on Tuesday morning. Officials said a case has been registered and police have formed several special teams to trace those who escaped. Investigators said they are examining CCTV footage to trace the movements of the prisoners.
