Balasore: A major accident was averted late on Thursday night near Gopinathpur railway station located in the Nilgiri region of Balasore district of Odisha. During loading and unloading of railway sleepers, a huge crane suddenly fell on top of two goods trains. No one has been reported injured in the incident, but it has had a widespread impact on railway services.

Crane fell on two goods trains

According to the information, the work of loading and unloading of railway sleepers was going on in a sleeper manufacturing unit in the area of Gopinathpur railway station. Meanwhile, the heavy crane being used suddenly became unbalanced and fell down. The crane fell directly on two goods trains parked near the railway track, causing chaos in the area.

overhead electric wires broken

Due to the fall of the crane, the overhead electric wires above the railway track also broke. Due to power supply disruption, railway officials had to immediately stop the movement of trains on that route. Keeping security in mind, the operation of passenger trains was also temporarily suspended. An atmosphere of panic was created among the employees and railway staff present there at the time of the incident.

No casualties in the accident

As soon as the crane fell, there was a loud noise and people present nearby started running here and there to save their lives. It is a matter of relief that at the time of the accident no passenger train was passing through that track nor did any employee come under the crane. Due to this a major accident was averted. If a passenger train had been passing through there at the same time or a large number of laborers had been working, the situation could have been very serious. After the incident, there was an atmosphere of concern in the entire area.

repair work expedited

As soon as information about the accident was received, senior railway officials, engineering team and technical staff reached the spot. After this, relief and restoration work was started. First of all, the process of removing the damaged crane was started, so that the railway track could be cleared. Besides, the work of repairing broken overhead electric wires is also being carried out at a rapid pace.

Train movement affected

Movement of trains will be restored only when all repair works are completed and safety checks are found satisfactory. At present, some passenger train services on the affected routes have been cancelled, while some trains have been diverted. However, the real reason behind the sudden fall of the crane is not yet clear. Initially, investigation is being done from angles like technical fault, excessive load or any kind of negligence in operation. A detailed investigation will be conducted into the matter so that the true causes of the accident can be found out. (Input- Shubham Kumar)
