Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation i.e. MSRTC suffered an average loss of Rs 1.60 crore every day in the last financial year. This revelation came in an official statement issued on Wednesday, which has raised questions on the financial condition of the state’s public transport system. According to PTI news, MSRTC, one of the largest government transport corporations in the country, has a fleet of more than 15,000 buses and about 90,000 employees.

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation serves more than 55 lakh passengers daily, but despite this the gap between income and expenditure is continuously increasing. The daily income of the corporation is around Rs 31.40 crore, while the expenditure reaches approximately Rs 33 crore. This is the reason why losses worth crores are being recorded every day. Talking about the entire financial year 2025-26, the total expenditure was Rs 12,066 crore, while the income was only Rs 11,475 crore, due to which the annual loss reached Rs 591 crore.
Instructions to take concrete and comprehensive steps
Considering this situation as serious, Maharashtra Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik has directed the officials to take concrete and comprehensive steps to reduce the loss. He expressed concern that out of the corporation’s 31 divisions, only 8—Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Akola, Dhule and Wardha—are profitable.
The Minister clearly said that in the coming financial year, there will be more effective use of buses and human resources through better planning and management. His aim is to reduce the daily loss of Rs 1.5 to 2 crore as soon as possible, so that the corporation can be made financially strong.
