Chennai has suffered another major setback in the ongoing season, CSK’s young batsman Ayush Mhatre has suffered a serious injury to his left hamstring, due to which he may now be out of the upcoming matches. IPL 2026 has been full of ups and downs for the team so far and Mhatre has been performing well for the team this season. In such a situation, his injury is a big blow for the team. Before Mhatre, MS Dhoni, Dewald Brevis, Khalil Ahmed were injured.
Ayush Mhatre was injured during the match against SRH
In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ayush Mhatre came as ‘impact sub’ in place of Gurjapaneet Singh. Mhatre came to bat in this match after Sanju Samson was out in the second over of CSK’s run chase. He was looking in great form and had scored a quick 30 runs in 12 balls, when after running two runs he stopped and grabbed his hamstring. He immediately threw his helmet and after that he was seen in pain and needed the help of physiotherapist Taifun Simsek.
Michael Hussey gave a big update on Mhatre’s injury
Ayush Mhatre took the help of physiotherapist for a long time on the field and after that he continued playing, he was seen limping while taking a single from Gaikwad on the very next ball of Nitish Kumar Reddy. After this, he hit the next ball strongly towards extra cover, where Heinrich Klaasen took a brilliant catch. After the defeat, Chennai’s batting coach Mike Hussey gave an update on Mhatre’s injury in the press conference, saying that his hamstring has been torn and the situation looks very bad. Hussey said that Mhatre’s absence would be a big loss for the team.
The coach said that Mhatre’s hamstring has been torn. I don’t know how serious it is. I’m pretty sure we’ll probably get him scanned tomorrow or the day after. Unfortunately it looks really bad and not having him would be a huge loss for us because he has been in very good form for us. He also made it clear that information about how long Mhatre will be out will be available only after the results of the scan are received. A hamstring injury may take up to six months to heal. Mhatre’s injury must have obviously increased Captain Gaikwad’s tension.
Who can get a chance in place of Mhatre?
Mhatre has been CSK’s best batsman so far this season. A total of 201 runs have come from his bat in IPL 2026. He has scored all these runs at a strike rate of 177.87. Urvil Patel, who scored 68 runs at a strike rate of 212.50 in three matches for CSK last season, is currently on the bench. If Mhatre is out for a few matches due to injury, then Urvil Patel can be given a chance in his place. Urvil Patel can prove to be a like for like replacement for Mhatre.
