ODI World Cup 2027 will be played next year, but preparations for it have already started. It is not yet decided which teams will play in next year’s ICC World Cup. Meanwhile, two-time ODI World Cup champion team West Indies is in danger. Especially Bangladesh has increased the difficulties for him. Bangladesh has created a big upset by winning the ODI series played against New Zealand. Due to this, Bangladesh also seems to be benefiting in the ICC ODI rankings.
ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia
Next year’s ICC ODI World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. For this, qualifiers are currently being played. Apart from this, the teams which are doing well in the ICC ODI rankings will get direct qualification. According to ICC rules, the teams that will be in the top 8 on March 31, 2027, will be seen playing the World Cup directly. But there is a catch in this. That is, the South African team has already qualified as the host team. Also, the team is in the top 5 in the ICC ODI rankings. That means then the top 9 teams in the ranking will get direct entry for the World Cup.
This was the condition of ICC ODI rankings before Bangladesh vs New Zealand ODI series
Talking before the Bangladesh vs New Zealand ODI series, the New Zealand team was at number two in the ICC rankings with a rating of 114. Whereas Bangladesh team was at number 9 with a rating of 79. That means exactly on the border line. West Indies’ rating was 77. This means that the difference in ratings between West Indies and Bangladesh was very less. But now that the three-match ODI series is over, things have also changed.
Bangladesh increased its distance from West Indies
Now i.e. in the rankings updated by ICC on 23rd April, New Zealand team is at second position with a rating of 111. That means New Zealand’s rating has decreased, but its ranking has not changed. If we talk about Bangladesh, its rating has now increased from 79 to 83. Whereas West Indies’ rating is still 77. That means Bangladesh’s ranking also did not change, but it has increased its distance from West Indies. When West Indies will not be able to overtake Bangladesh soon.
As of now, West Indies cricket team may be out.
However, the decision will be taken after March 31, 2027 on the basis of ICC ranking. But if we look at today’s date, we see that Bangladesh is in the top 9 and will directly qualify for the World Cup, but the West Indies team is at number 10, so they will have to play the qualifiers. This may increase the problems of West Indies. It remains to be seen how both the teams perform in ODI cricket in the upcoming matches.
