TVK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay today fulfilled one of his election promises. He started the ‘Thaimaman Thanga Modiram’ scheme for newborn babies. Chief Minister Vijay reached Madurai in a special plane and from there he launched the scheme at the government Rajaji Hospital. CM Vijay gifted 22 carat gold rings of one gram each to 25 newborn babies. On this occasion, the CM picked up many new born babies in his lap and also named some babies by whispering their names on the request of the mothers. Children born in government hospitals will get the benefit of this government scheme from June 22, 2026.
CM Vijay fulfilled his promise
Actually, in Tamil Nadu there is a culture of giving gifts from the maternal uncle when a child is born. During the election campaign, CM Vijay, calling himself a brother of the women of Tamil Nadu, had announced that after the formation of his party’s government, a 1 gram gold ring would be gifted by an maternal uncle to every baby born in a government hospital. Under the first phase of this scheme, the government has purchased 1.28 lakh rings. These were packed securely and each ring was engraved with a unique serial number to ensure complete transparency in the implementation of the scheme. The state government has fixed an annual expenditure of Rs 755.83 crore for this scheme.
Who will get the benefits?
Mothers who are permanent residents of the state and have registered under ‘Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation’ (PICME) and have also obtained ‘Reproductive and Child Health’ (RCH) ID will be eligible to avail this benefit. From today the work of gifting gold rings will start in the entire state. For this, 107 centers have been set up across the state and a target has been set to gift rings to 100 babies every day in each centre.
Scheme launched in the entire state
The scheme was initially scheduled to launch on September 15, but was postponed and later scheduled for September 28. After this, the place of launch was changed to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. With the launch of the scheme across the state from Monday, eligible newborns born in government health centers will be covered under it. In this way the Tamil Nadu government is going to implement one of its important election promises.
