Ed Joyce returns to Ireland cricket, becomes high performance batting coach

Ireland Cricket has given a big responsibility to former international cricketer Ed Joyce to sharpen the batting of its men’s team. Joyce, former head coach of the Ireland women’s team, has now been appointed high performance batting coach. He will also work with the Ireland men’s senior team to develop young talent. He will assume his new responsibility with immediate effect.

Played more than 150 matches for Ireland

Ed Joyce’s relationship with Irish cricket has been long and successful. He played 151 matches for Ireland in his international career and scored 5552 runs at an average of 40.82. During this period, he scored 10 centuries and 29 half-centuries. Joyce also represented England in 19 matches. In 2019, about a year after retiring from cricket, Joyce was appointed head coach of the Ireland women’s team. During his tenure, good progress was seen in the performance of the women’s team and development of players. After stepping down from the role of head coach in February 2025, he has now taken up new responsibility in the men’s cricket team.

Cricket Ireland’s High Performance Director Graham West expressed his delight at Joyce’s appointment. “Whether as a player or coach, Ed Joyce has always been a great asset to Irish cricket and we are delighted to have him once again part of our coaching setup,” he said. West further said that Joyce was a brilliant and technically excellent batsman during his playing days. She also proved her coaching ability as the head coach of the women’s team. His appointment is timely given the busy off-season and he will begin working with the players immediately.

Joyce expressed happiness on joining Irish cricket

Joyce also expressed happiness on getting the new responsibility. He said that it has always been his priority to remain associated with Irish cricket after retirement. Working as head coach of the women’s team was a great experience for her and she enjoyed working daily on improving the players’ technique and mentality. He said that there has been a lot of change in modern cricket and the importance of power hitting has increased, but good technique and positive mindset are still very important for a batsman. Joyce also praised the preparation of the Ireland men’s team over the past few years and said that a lot of hard work has been done behind the scenes to make the players competitive at international level.
