Rajat Sharma’s Blog | Whose government in Tamil Nadu? Vijay’s or DMK-AIADMK?

5 Min Read

There is still suspense regarding the formation of government in Tamil Nadu. On Friday evening, news came that TVK leader Vijay would take oath the next day at Nehru Stadium in Chennai, but a few minutes later news came that the Governor has not invited Vijay to form the government, as he still does not have the support of the MLAs required for majority.

Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Friday, but only handed over the letter of support from 116 MLAs. Vijay said that some other parties will support him, but the Governor said that first bring letters of support from 118 MLAs. Vijay has got the support only from Congress and Left parties. Vijay’s TVK has 107 MLAs, 5 Congress and 4 Left together make 116 MLAs. Left parties have said that they will support Vijay’s government on the basis of external issues.

Now it has been formally confirmed that the DMK led alliance in Tamil Nadu has broken. Congress was the first to leave the alliance. DMK leader MK Stalin is very angry with this betrayal by Congress. DMK has announced its separation from the INDIA alliance at the Centre. Stalin’s sister Kanimozhi has written a letter to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha asking him to make arrangements to seat the DMK MPs separately from the Congress. In the letter, Kanimozhi wrote that DMK should not be considered with the INDIA Alliance.

Stalin is angry that he did not leave Congress in bad times, this time in the elections Congress won five seats with the help of DMK but soon after the election results came, Rahul Gandhi announced to end relations with DMK and support TVK. I have confirmed information that after the defeat in the elections, DMK had tried to form the AIADMK government.

Stalin had asked CPI-CPM and VCK to also support AIADMK from outside, but Left parties have a problem with BJP’s alliance with AIADMK. The Left parties informed Stalin before deciding to support Vijay, so there is less resentment from him. Stalin’s real resentment is with Congress which hastily supported Vijay’s TVK without talking to him.

DMK leaders feel that if Congress had not suddenly left DMK, then DMK and AIADMK together could have stopped Vijay from forming the government. Now the situation is that even after getting the support of Congress and Left, Vijay has not been able to gather the majority figure, he has met the Governor thrice but he has the support of total 116 MLAs, two MLAs are short for majority.

Now anything can happen in changed circumstances. VCK leaders are in talks with Stalin. Now if DMK and AIADMK come together, Congress will be in trouble. In 1979, Biju Patnaik had organized a meeting between Karunanidhi and MGR and tried to merge DMK and AIADMK, but that effort was not successful. At that time many ministers of MGR were strongly against the merger.

This time the situation is different, DMK has 59 MLAs and AIADMK has 47 MLAs, which is more than the majority figure. (Rajat Sharma)
