Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 : Campaigning for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is in full swing. Voting is to be held on April 23 and results to be declared on May 4. This time the contest has not become DMK vs AIADMK but DMK vs TVK vs AIADMK vs NTK. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is seeking votes on the issues of welfare schemes, social justice and development. AIADMK leaders are emphasizing on anti-incumbency wave and economic relief. Vijay’s TVK is energizing the youth and emotional voters, big roadshows and rallies are taking place. NTK is betting on Tamil nationalism and the election atmosphere in the state is very heated. Caste equation, unemployment, inflation and Tamil identity remain the main issues in the assembly elections across Tamil Nadu including the Gobichettipalayam assembly seat. However, the fight is particularly fierce in Kongu and the southern regions.

Why is Gobichettipalayam seat special?

It is noteworthy that, Gobichettipalayam is considered an important and famous seat of Tamil Nadu. It is the heartland of the Kongu Vellala Gounder community. Being an agricultural area, the issues of farmer sentiment, water availability, textile industry and business class decide the elections. This seat is a stronghold of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). KA Sengottaiyan has been elected MLA from here eight times and is known for his local influence and organization skills in the Kongu region. After he left AIADMK and joined TVK, AIADMK has fielded VB Prabhu here, while DMK is betting on its power plans. Overall, the caste equation, agrarian crisis, local leadership and now the rise of TVK makes it the most watched seat in the western part of Tamil Nadu.

As per 2021 data, Gobichettipalayam has 2.37 lakh voters. SC voters also matter a lot in terms of victory here, whose estimated percentage is around 15-20%. The rest are from OBC, backward and small communities in Gobichettipalayam.

Let us tell you that AIADMK had a strong victory in the last assembly elections from Gobichettipalayam. Sengottaiyan had got 1,08,608 votes at that time. Whereas DMK’s GV Manimaran had to be satisfied with 80,045 votes. Thus, there was a difference of 28,563 votes between the two candidates.

Close competition in 2026

In the 2026 election scenario, AIADMK’s hold has weakened due to Sengottaiyan’s departure to TVK, but DMK is betting on the advantage of power. The distribution of Kongu votes in Gobichettipalayam is being considered decisive. If Sengottaiyan retains his old vote bank then TVK will benefit, otherwise DMK may remain in a strong position. At the same time, many small parties including NTK can cut votes. In short, development, farmer issues and personal influence can prove to be game changers this time too.
