Odisha A very sad case has come to light from Nabarangpur district. Here a family allegedly had to mortgage their ration card to bring home the body of their dead newborn son. The family alleges that due to non-availability of a government Mahaprayan vehicle, they had to hire a private ambulance by paying Rs 5,000. In fact, many facilities have been provided in the government hospitals of Odisha to help the patients and their families. But a poor family from Nabarangpur district has alleged that they could not get the benefit of government Mahaprayan Seva in their time of need. According to the family, after the death of the child, they asked for a vehicle from the hospital to take the body home, but despite waiting for a long time, they did not get the vehicle.

Ambulance by mortgaging ration card

Eventually, the family had to raise money by mortgaging their ration cards to take their dead son’s body to the village. After this, a private ambulance was arranged by spending Rs 5,000. According to the information, Ambika Nayak, a resident of Daleguda village of Nabarangapur district, gave birth to a son on September 29 at Paparahandi Community Health Centre. The newborn baby was of low weight, so he was first admitted to Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital for better treatment. From here the child was referred to Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput for further treatment.

The child died late at night

According to the family, the child died late Thursday night during treatment in the hospital. The family was already immersed in grief due to the death of their son. After this, arranging a vehicle to take the dead body to their village became a big problem for them. The family alleges that doctors had advised them to use the Mahaprayan service to take the child’s body home. After this he requested the concerned employees to provide vehicles. But according to the family, they were told that the engine of the Mahaprayan vehicle had a fault and it could not cover a distance of about 60 kilometres.

Refusal to provide government vehicle

Expressing her grief, the child’s mother Ambika Nayak said that she had asked for a government vehicle to take her dead son home, but was told that the vehicle had engine problems and could not go that far. According to Ambika, in such a situation, the family had to mortgage their ration card to raise money, so that they could hire a private ambulance and take their son’s body home.

Had to make arrangements to transport the dead body myself

Pushta Bhatra, a relative of the deceased child, has also made serious allegations regarding Mahaprayan Seva. According to him, the family was told that the Mahaprayan vehicle would reach around 1 am. The family kept waiting in this hope, but the vehicle did not come. Pushta Bhatra told that the family waited till around 10 o’clock the next morning. When no vehicle arrived for a long time, he decided to make arrangements to take the body to the village himself.

Serious allegations against the hospital

The family alleges that during this time they were also suggested to bury the child in the hospital itself or take the body on a motorcycle. However, the family wanted to take their son’s body to the village so that the last rites could be performed as per their traditions. Eventually, the family raised money by mortgaging ration cards and hired a private ambulance for Rs 5,000. After this, the body of the newborn was taken to the village, where the family performed the last rites as per their traditions. (Input- Shubham Kumar)
