Guwahati: Just a day before the assembly elections in Assam, a big political development has come to light. Congress candidate from Udalguri seat, Suren Daimri, on Wednesday announced to leave the party and withdraw from the election field. However, Congress has clarified that Daimri has not yet formally submitted his resignation to the party. A senior Election Commission official said that Daimri’s name will remain in the electronic voting machine and voters will be able to vote in his favor as the last date for withdrawal of nominations has already ended.
‘Congress works only for Miya community’
Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora told PTI that Daimri has announced his decision in front of the media, but the party has not yet received his resignation. Earlier, while talking to journalists, Suren Daimri said that he has resigned from Congress and has decided to withdraw from the election contest. He said, ‘There is no use in staying in Congress. He has betrayed me. Congress works only for the Mia community, but does nothing for Scheduled Tribe people like me.
‘The party leadership did not even answer my phone’
Daimri also claimed that he did not receive any support from the party after being declared the candidate. He said, ‘I called the party leadership repeatedly, but they did not even pick up my call. I am very sad because they did not help me at all. Even the District Congress Committee did not help me. Daimri said that he waited for a long time, but when he did not get any response, he decided to leave the party. On the question of resigning a day before the voting, he said, ‘I have not betrayed the party, the party has betrayed me.’
