The era of digital payments is continuously gaining momentum in India and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is leading it. In March 2026, UPI once again created a new record and recorded 22.64 billion transactions. This figure is not only higher than last month, but also shows that the country is rapidly moving towards a cashless economy.
According to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data, UPI transactions were 20.39 billion in February 2026, which increased to 22.64 billion in March. That means there has been an increase of crores of transactions in a single month. This increase clearly shows that people are now considering digital payments as more reliable and easy.
The total value of transactions also increased
Not only the number of transactions, but also the total amount has seen a huge increase. Total transactions through UPI in March were Rs 29.53 lakh crore, while in February this figure was Rs 26.84 lakh crore. It is clear from this that along with small payments, big transactions are also now taking place through digital medium.
Crores of transactions every day
If we talk about average, about 73 crore (730 million) transactions took place every day in March. At the same time, the average value of daily transactions was around Rs 95,243 crore. These figures show that UPI has now become an important part of people’s everyday life. The popularity of UPI can be gauged from the fact that there has been tremendous growth in it on an annual basis. In March 2026, a growth of 24% has been recorded in the number of transactions and 19% in total value.
Digital India is gaining momentum
The Department of Financial Services (DFS) has also expressed happiness over this achievement and appealed to the people to adopt digital payments. UPI, which has been developed by NPCI, has today become one of the most popular payment systems in the country. The facility of instant money transfer through mobile apps and banking platforms has made it accessible to every section of people.
