For decades, there has been a lot of debate in Bollywood about insiders and outsiders, but only selected actors and actresses become stars. However, this industry has proved every time that a film family can provide opportunities, but not stardom because every new face earns fame on his own. Success has come through talent, dedication and sometimes luck. The perfect example of this is Mohnish Bahl, who is the son of famous actress Nutan. Nutan was considered one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema. Despite belonging to one of the most famous film families of Bollywood, Mohnish’s journey in the industry was not at all easy.

Superstar mother’s son’s flop debut

Mohnish Bahl made his Bollywood debut in 1983 with Sanjay Dutt in the film ‘Bekraar’. However, this film did not do well at the box office and he did not get recognition as a lead actor. Despite coming from a famous film family, success remained far away from Mohnish in the early stages of his career. In the 1980s, he worked in many films, including films like ‘Teri Bahaon Mein’, ‘Meri Adalat’ and ‘Itihaas’. Unfortunately, his back-to-back films were flops, due to which the actor had to struggle a lot to make his place in the industry. Due to continuous box office failures, Mohnish decided to quit acting.

Why did Nutan’s son want to leave acting?

In fact, Mohnish Bahl had told in an old interview of The Times of India that he was so disappointed with acting that he had decided to leave Bollywood completely and even thought of making a career as a pilot. However, a big turn in his life came when Salman Khan recommended his name for the film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’.

Actor’s luck brightened because of Salman Khan

Speaking to ETimes in 2021, Mohnish said, ‘By the time I got Maine Pyar Kiya, I had not only started my career but had also finished it. I felt that my career was over after a few flops and I was planning to become a pilot. I was working on getting my commercial flying license because I wanted to do something I loved in the aviation sector. One day I met Salman Khan and we became friends. He was also trying to get into the filmmaking business, so when he got this break in Maine Pyar Kiya, he recommended my name for the role of the villain.

Not a hero but a villain but a shadow actor

Recalling this big turning point in his career, Mohnish Bahl told that he agreed to do this role when Salman Khan himself asked him if he would like to be a part of this film. The actor admitted that accepting a negative role at that point in his career was not an easy decision. After facing many failures at the box office as a lead actor, Mohnish said that he found it difficult to play the role of a villain, because in those times, actors were afraid that after playing a negative character, they would be stuck in the same type of characters forever. However, he also agreed with Salman Khan and said, ‘That’s why I said yes to this role, but I never expected that it would give a new life to my career and keep me a memorable hero in the industry even after 30 years. I don’t think even Salman would have thought about this.
