diesel Amid increased demand at private petrol pumps due to huge difference in retail and wholesale prices, the government has expressed its objection to imposing any limit on the sale of fuel. Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal said on Thursday that no one is allowed to limit the sale of petrol and diesel. On the news of imposing a limit on the sale of diesel, Mittal said that it cannot be accepted and there has been no change in the government’s stand on this matter.
Jio-BP and Nayara Energy limited the purchase of diesel at some petrol pumps
This statement of Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has come at a time when Jio-BP and Nayara Energy have limited the purchase of diesel at some of their petrol pumps. With the widening gap between retail and wholesale diesel prices, factories, telecom companies, hotels, hospitals and other big consumers have started buying relatively cheaper diesel from retail pumps.
No permission to limit fuel sales
Neeraj Mittal said, “No one is allowed to limit the sale of fuel. This is not acceptable and should not be done.” He said that the government has already given letters and instructions to private companies regarding limiting the sale of petrol and diesel and there has been no change in the government’s stand.
Difference between retail and wholesale prices of diesel reaches Rs 50 per liter
The difference between retail and wholesale prices of diesel has reached almost Rs 50 per liter. Due to this, some industrial consumers are buying 400-600 liters of diesel at a time from retail pumps. This is increasing pressure on the stores of some petrol pumps, while their storage capacity is limited and re-supply may take a few days. In such a situation, Jio-BP has imposed a limit of maximum 50 liters of diesel per day for a customer to purchase at some pumps, whereas at Naira Energy pumps this limit is between 70 to 200 liters.
Ministry in contact with private oil companies
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in this matter that the ministry is in touch with private oil companies. However, he did not give much information about it. Retail petrol and diesel prices have remained stable since May, while international crude oil prices have increased. In contrast, fuel prices sourced from industrial and other bulk consumers have risen sharply as they are more closely linked to international market rates.
sufficient fuel available
Jio-BP had recently said that all its petrol pumps are operational and there is sufficient fuel available. It had said that in view of the current demand, it is taking appropriate steps to ensure equal availability of fuel for transportation and other needs. Nayara Energy also said it is focusing on ensuring adequate supply to its over 7,000 dealer stations and other channels. However, in the response of the companies, nothing was said directly about imposing purchase limits.
