Traffic jam is a big problem for lakhs of people traveling on the road daily in Delhi-NCR. Especially during peak hours, it takes a lot of time to travel even a few kilometers. Now the government is preparing to reduce this problem by connecting the traffic system with technology. The Cabinet has approved Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) worth ₹1,789.52 crore for Delhi. Through this system, traffic signals, monitoring and enforcement of traffic rules will be connected to a single smart network.
Delhi ITMS will be implemented on 42 major traffic corridors of the capital. The project is targeted to be completed in three phases in about 24 months. After this, there will be arrangements for operation and maintenance of the system for five years. Under this, 1,092 traffic signal locations will be connected to the Adaptive Traffic Control System.
Signals will change automatically after seeing traffic
The most special thing about this system will be smart and adaptive traffic signals. These signals will be able to change their timing according to the amount of traffic present on the road. This can help reduce unnecessary stops at red lights on empty roads and long waits on high-traffic routes. The system will send information about incidents like jams, slow-moving vehicles and road accidents to the traffic police through real-time data. Based on this, the police will be able to divert traffic as per need.
Ambulance will get green corridor
ITMS will also have a priority system for emergency vehicles. The system will help in creating green corridors to quickly move ambulances and other emergency vehicles through traffic. This can help reduce the time to reach the hospital in serious conditions.
AI keeps an eye on rule breakers
ITMS will also keep an eye on traffic rule violations. The system will be able to detect cases like red light jumping, stop line violation, overspeeding, wrong side driving, no helmet, no seat belt, illegal parking and mobile use while driving. Arrangements for automated enforcement of traffic rules will be made at about 1,029 locations. The AI based system will also help in identifying stolen or blacklisted vehicles and vehicles that repeatedly break rules.
Drivers will get live information
Through road sign boards and digital platforms, people will be able to get information about jams, diversions, parking availability and current road conditions. This information may also be shared with the platform providing navigation services.
