America has announced the imposition of permanent tariffs against 60 of its trading partner countries, including India, based on investigations related to forced labour. However, the tariff rate for India will remain at 10% instead of the proposed 12.5%. India’s Commerce Ministry on Saturday said that due to the country’s continuous efforts, the US has placed India in the lower category of 10 percent additional duty.
45 percent of India’s exports out of the scope of 10 percent additional duty
The Commerce Ministry said that about 45 percent of India’s exports are still out of the scope of the 10 percent additional duty imposed by the US under Section 301. The remaining 55 percent of India’s exports will attract an additional 10 percent duty. These fees are lower than most countries involved in Section 301 investigations. The ministry said a large portion of Indian exports to the US, which do not attract any additional duty, will remain outside the scope of the proposed 10 per cent additional duty.
India’s talks with America continue
The Commerce Ministry further said in its statement that India is in continuous dialogue with the US on textile-specific arrangements as part of the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. The Government of India is committed to working with the United States to quickly conclude a bilateral trade agreement.

In March, the Office of the US Trade Representative also launched two separate investigations under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. As Trump redrafts his trade agenda, the US announced new tariffs on 60 partners. Due to India’s actions, it has now been included among the countries which will face 10% tariff instead of 12.5%.
On which countries 10 percent duty will be applicable
These 10% tariffs will apply to countries that prohibit the import of goods made from forced labor, that have pledged to establish and enforce such a ban through a trade agreement with the United States, or that have implemented a partial regime to prevent the import of certain types of goods made from forced labor.
Who are included in the countries with 10 percent duty?
Apart from India, these countries include Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom. The US will impose 12.5% tariffs on all other countries it has investigated.
America will charge 200 percent tariff on generic medicines
He said that US President Donald Trump had recently announced the imposition of 200 percent tariff on generic medicines. He had said that currently there will be no tariff for two years on generic medicines coming to America, but after this, 100% tariff will be imposed from August 2028 and up to 200% tariff in the next phase.
