Government has doubled the daily quota of 5 kg LPG cylinder sold at market price for migrant labourers. The government has taken this step to maintain fuel availability amid constraints in gas supply due to tensions in the Gulf countries. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, told a press briefing on Tuesday that through a letter issued on April 6, states have been instructed to increase the daily quota. This quota has been doubled from the average daily supply at the beginning of March.
The price of 5 kg gas cylinder in Delhi is Rs 549.
Unlike the subsidized 14.2 kg gas cylinder commonly used in domestic kitchens, the 5 kg cylinder is available at market price. Its price in Delhi is Rs 549, while a 14.2 kg cylinder costs Rs 913. Migrant workers coming to the city in search of work often do not have regular LPG connections, so this step has been taken to provide relief to them. These small cylinders can be easily purchased by showing the identity card to the LPG distributor. Sujata Sharma said that since March 23, about 7.8 lakh 5 kg cylinders have been sold. More than 1.06 lakh small cylinders were sold on Monday alone.
Commercial LPG supply increased by 70 percent
Additionally, commercial LPG supply has also been increased to about 70 percent of pre-West Asia crisis levels. More than 4,300 raids have been conducted to stop hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders. Appealing to people to avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel and LPG, he said that there is sufficient stock of fuel available in the country and retail sales centers are functioning normally. Referring to the stability of fuel supply, Sujata Sharma said that states should hold regular briefings to deal with misinformation related to it.
