The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken a big decision to strengthen the digital security of the people. The department has issued a new policy, in which it has been made mandatory to store the data of calls and messages of Indian users in the country. The Department of Telecommunications has issued this new rule for telecom infrastructure providers, mobile tower companies, satellite gateways and cloud network companies.
According to the recent reports, the telecom regulator i.e. TRAI is also preparing to change the regulation by showing strictness regarding data sharing of call management apps. This rule states that data of spam calls reported by users on call management apps like Truecaller will have to be shared with the regulator.
What is the new order?
DoT has made it clear in its order that no data or log related to calls, messages or network will be sent or shared outside the country. The Department of Telecommunications has issued this order under the new Telecommunication Act 2023, in which emphasis has been laid on making the digital infrastructure more secure.
DoT had issued an order regarding this on July 20, in which the department said that new entities will have to store their entire network, data and logs in India. Copies of this data cannot be sent outside India. Not only this, DoT has said in its order that the government can conduct audit anytime for investigation. If it comes to national security, action can be taken without any prior notice.
After this new order of the Department of Telecommunications, the demand for local data centers will increase. For this, the government has started a new category of cloud-hosted telecom network providers, in which an entry fee of only Rs 10 lakh will be charged. No annual fee will have to be paid for this. After this order of the Department of Telecommunications, small companies will also get the benefit of better infrastructure. Also, digital connectivity will be stronger than before.
DoT showed strictness
The Department of Telecommunications has made it clear in its order that no telecom operator can blame the delay in laying the network for not getting government approval. Delay in getting permission will not be accepted as an excuse for violation of rules. Now telecom and cloud companies will have to store the data of Indians on local servers without any delay.
