In the year 2009, Samsung launched its phone Solar Guru E1107. This feature phone was launched especially for people living in areas where there is electricity problem. The phone could be charged and used by keeping it in sunlight. There was a large solar panel installed in the back panel of the phone, which covered the entire area.

However, this Samsung phone was not completely dependent on solar power. You could also charge this phone with electricity. The solar panel was given only to charge the phone in emergency. The company claimed that by keeping this phone in bright sunlight for an hour, one could get talk time of 5 to 10 minutes. To fully charge the battery, 40 hours of sunlight were required.

Talking about the features of this phone, it had a 1.5 inch display. Features like FM radio, torch, MP3 ringtone, games and mobile tracker were also provided in the phone. In this the company used 800mAh battery. In normal use, the phone’s battery offered talktime for 8 hours. The price of this Samsung phone was Rs 2,799.

Why hasn’t technology progressed?

Samsung, however, did not pursue solar panel technology until later. The main reason for this is that after the advent of smartphones, phones started requiring more energy. The battery of the phone also became larger, making it almost impossible to charge it through solar panels. This would have required a larger panel, which would not have fit in the back of the phone.
