A Sri Lankan court on July 27 has rejected the bail plea of Manjot Kalra and another Indian national Yuvraj Pushpa. On behalf of the accused, senior lawyer K.W.S. Fernando argued in the court that both of them were not well, hence they should be granted bail. However, the prosecution opposed this, saying that the Sports Crime Prevention Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Police is still investigating the case and it would not be appropriate to grant bail at this stage. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered continuation of judicial custody.
Sri Lankan players lodged complaint
The case began with a complaint by Sri Lankan international cricketers Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando and Dunith Velalage. The court was also told that later two other local players had also filed their complaints in this matter. The complaint alleged match-fixing and corrupt practices, the investigation of which is ongoing.
This matter has come to light at a time when the Lanka Premier League 2026 is being organized from July 17 to August 8. A total of 24 matches are being played in this T20 league of five teams. Questions have also been raised on the credibility of the league due to allegations of match fixing amid the tournament. Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the police investigation and the next court hearing.
