New Delhi: India on Thursday successfully flight-tested a quasi-ballistic missile named ‘Pralaya’ from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. This missile has been developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The Defense Ministry said that this ballistic missile was successfully flight tested at around 11:10 am on Thursday.
Missile test was successful
According to the Defense Ministry, data from various instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur has confirmed that all the test objectives have been achieved. This missile has been developed by Hyderabad-based ‘Research Center Building’ (RCI) and DRDO with indigenous technology. Bharat Dynamics Limited, which was a partner in its development and production, has manufactured this system. The flight test was conducted as part of the ‘User Evaluation Trial’ in which senior DRDO officials, industry representatives and members of the defense forces were present.
Paving the way for inclusion in the army
After this successful test, the way has now been cleared for this system to be included in the army. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and security forces for this successful test. He said that this missile, equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, will further strengthen the technical capabilities and operational preparedness of the Army against emerging threats. Defense Secretary, Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams associated with this successful test. Know about Pralay Missile
The Pralay missile is an indigenously developed, solid-propellant, quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile. Its strike range is said to be between 150 to 500 km. It can carry a payload of 1,000 kg up to 350 km, while a lighter payload of 500 kg increases its range to about 500 km. According to the Defense Ministry, advanced guidance and navigation systems have been used in it for accurate targeting. It can carry a variety of warheads to hit different targets. This missile can be fired from a mobile launcher, making it easy to deploy from different places.
‘Pralaya’ ballistic missile
Pralay travels on a ‘quasi-ballistic’ trajectory, which means it can change its path during flight, whereas normal ballistic missiles follow a fixed path. Due to this quality, it becomes very difficult for the enemy air defense system to intercept it. Its solid-fuel propulsion and mobile launch platform provide great operational flexibility.
