Monsoon gains momentum across the country, air services affected in Mumbai, rain alert in many states including Delhi-Jharkhand

Monsoon activities intensified in most parts of the country on Sunday. Aircraft operations were disrupted due to heavy rains in Mumbai, while weather alerts have been issued in Delhi, Kerala, Odisha and Jharkhand. It has also rained in the national capital Delhi. Mumbai has been hit the hardest this monsoon, where due to heavy rain overnight, flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport had to be stopped for about an hour.

Red alert of rain in Mumbai

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai on Sunday. Heavy rain has been predicted at some places. Many flights were affected due to the disruption in aircraft operations, causing passengers to face delays of an average of 75 minutes in departures and at least 28 minutes in arrivals.


“At around 10.17 am, runway operations were affected due to inclement weather, including gusty winds up to 42 knots and low visibility due to heavy rain,” Mumbai International Airport Limited said in a statement.

However, operations at the airstrip were normalized within an hour after the weather improved. According to official data, many areas of Mumbai have recorded rainfall of more than 200 mm and at some places up to 300 mm in the last 24 hours.

Rain fell in different areas of Delhi

Moderate rain in many parts of Delhi on Sunday gave a big relief to the people from the sultry heat. According to the Meteorological Department data, Chhatarpur recorded the maximum rainfall of 49 mm till 2.30 pm. After this, 35 mm rainfall occurred in Gurugram, 18 mm in Mehrauli, 17 mm in Greater Noida, 8 mm in Najafgarh and 7 mm in Janakpuri. The Meteorological Department has predicted generally cloudy sky and moderate rain during the day while the maximum temperature is likely to be around 36 degrees Celsius.

Yellow alert of rain in Jharkhand

On the other hand, in Jharkhand, IMD has issued ‘Yellow Alert’ regarding thunder, lightning and strong winds in all 24 districts from July 6 to 9. Heavy rain is expected in Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Ranchi on Monday.


The weather center said, ‘The state is likely to be cloudy with light to moderate rain in most parts, while heavy rain may occur at some places. During this period, the maximum temperature may drop by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.

Warning issued regarding landslide in Kerala

Most parts of Kerala also received heavy rain on Sunday. After this, ‘Orange’ and ‘Yellow’ alerts have been issued in many areas. The weather department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on July 7 (Tuesday) and Kannur on July 6 (Monday). The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has advised people living in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods to move to safe places as per the instructions of the administration.
