Will the government again present the delimitation bill in Parliament? Discussion intensified after assembly elections, understand the formula here

3 Min Read

After BJP’s victory in Assam and Bengal, Modi government is once again busy in getting the delimitation bill passed in Parliament. The Home Ministry is preparing to introduce a new bill. The government wants the Delimitation Bill and ‘One Country One Election Bill’ to be approved by the Parliament before the 2029 elections. Let us tell you that last time when the government brought the Delimitation Bill in the Parliament just before the elections in five states, it did not get two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha and this bill fell in the Parliament.

How can the bill be passed?

In fact, after the recent assembly elections, the equations have changed in many states. After the results of Tamil Nadu, the alliance of Congress and DMK has broken. It is being told that DMK has been contacted to get the bill passed. Besides, the government is also keeping a close eye on the ongoing stir in TMC. If there is a split in TMC and a large number of MPs leave Mamata’s party, then it will be easy for the government to pass the Delimitation Bill in Parliament this time.

What happened in Parliament when the bill was introduced?

In fact, last time when the Delimitation Bill was presented in the Lok Sabha, the government needed two-third majority i.e. 362 votes to pass it. However, 298 votes were cast in favor of the bill, while 230 MPs voted against the bill. For this reason the government could not get this bill passed.

What did Congress say?

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s statement has also come amid speculations about the re-introduction of the Delimitation Bill by the Central Government. He said, “The government has not contacted us, and there is no formal consultation process going on… People want a serious discussion on the entire issue of how to properly represent our people in the Lok Sabha, so that the interests of the population as well as the state are taken care of.”
