New Delhi: Today the country’s politics heated up on the issue of giving 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and Assemblies. On one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to the women of the country calling this initiative necessary, while the opposition raised questions on the government. Prime Minister Modi said in his letter that if Lok Sabha and various assembly elections are held in 2029 with full reservation for women, then Indian democracy will become even stronger and vibrant. He wrote that women are doing excellent work in many fields today, hence it is very important to increase their participation in legislative institutions. PM Modi also said that “daughters cannot be asked to wait for their rights.”
Special session of Parliament called
The government has already brought a law related to women’s reservation, i.e. ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ in 2023. But according to the existing provisions, it was considered difficult to implement it till 2029. For this reason, the government is now going to make changes in this law and for this a special session of the Parliament has been called. Here, Trinamool Congress cornered the government on this issue. Party MP Derek O’Brien alleged that the government was making a mockery of Parliament. He said that the copy of the constitutional amendment was not given to the MPs till 48 hours before the start of the Parliament session. Later in the press conference, he said that the issue of women’s rights was first raised by Mamata Banerjee and BJP is copying the same. However, shortly after Derek O’Brien’s statement, all MPs were given a copy of the constitutional amendment.
Government is going to present three bills
This time the government is going to present three big bills in the Parliament. The first bill is related to the formation of Delimitation Commission. The second bill is to increase the seats of Parliament, under which the total seats of Lok Sabha will be increased to 850. Of these, 815 seats are proposed for states and 35 seats are proposed for union territories. Actually, there was a ban on reorganization (delimitation) of seats for a long time. Through this bill, this ban will be removed and the process of delimitation can start afresh. The third bill is related to the implementation of women’s reservation. There is a provision in this that 33 percent reservation will be given to women for 15 years. After this the reserved seats will be changed on rotation basis. Overall, the government is going to take big steps towards implementing women’s reservation soon, but the political debate on this issue is also increasing.
