BJP has achieved an important victory in the civic elections of Himachal Pradesh. BJP has captured three out of four municipal corporations. Congress has only one municipal corporation. Giving a big blow to Congress, BJP has won Mandi, Dharamshala and Solan Municipal Corporation elections. Congress now has only Palampur municipal body. BJP says this is a referendum and is in its favor.
Congress leader Naresh Chauhan said that only about 15 percent of the voters of the state participate in these elections. In such a situation, it is difficult to gauge the mood of the people of the entire state through these elections. Elections to urban local bodies in Himachal were held on May 17 and the results were declared on Sunday. This election is important because assembly elections will be held in Himachal Pradesh in 2027. BJP retained Mandi Municipal Corporation and snatched the power of Dharamshala and Solan Municipal Corporation from Congress.
Elections on 63 seats
Voting took place for a total of 63 seats. BJP has won 37 seats and Congress 23 seats. Three seats went to independent candidates. In Mandi, BJP won a landslide victory by winning 12 seats, while Congress got only one seat and one seat went to an independent candidate. In Solan, BJP managed to win 10 out of 17 seats. Congress stood second with six seats and one seat was won by an independent candidate.
Lotus blossomed in Dharamshala also
In Dharamshala Municipal Corporation, BJP won 11 seats and Congress got five seats. Apart from this, one seat was given to an independent candidate. The Congress was victorious in Palampur and regained control of the municipal corporation by winning 11 out of 15 wards, while the BJP won four seats. The highest turnout of 68.97 percent was recorded in Palampur. After this, 66.78 percent voting took place in Mandi, 60.01 percent in Dharamshala and 58.32 percent in Solan.
BJP said referendum
BJP state president Rajiv Bindal said that the results of the four urban local bodies clearly show that the people of the state have completely rejected the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. He said that these elections have proved to be a referendum against the anti-people policies of the state government, in which the public has expressed its confidence in favor of the BJP.
Congress will review the elections
Principal media advisor to the chief minister and Congress leader Naresh Chauhan said the party will review local factors in relation to the election results, including the candidate selection process. He said the situation in the entire state cannot be determined based on the voting pattern of only about 15 per cent of voters spread across four assembly constituencies.
