The government had introduced the historic ‘Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill 2026’, ‘Delimitation Bill, 2026’ and ‘Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ in the Lower House of Parliament on Thursday, related to implementing 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies. These bills were discussed till 1.20 pm late in the night and the discussion on them will be taken forward on Friday morning. Opposition parties alleged that the government is preparing to strengthen its political ground by delimitation in the name of women’s reservation and snatch their share from other backward classes. He said that women’s reservation can be freed from delimitation and implemented from 2029 itself on the basis of the current number of Lok Sabha number 543.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to all political parties to unanimously pass the Constitution Amendment Bill related to the Women’s Reservation Act, saying that those who oppose it will have to pay the price for a long time. While giving his views on these three bills, Modi also said that this issue should not be weighed on the scales of politics and he is ready to give credit for this to the opposition parties also. Rejecting the concerns of some members related to delimitation, Prime Minister Modi said that as the delimitation happened earlier and the ratio which has been running since then, there will be no change in it and the increase in the number of seats will also be in the same ratio. Meanwhile, the Women’s Reservation Act 2023 also came into force from Thursday. This information was given in a notification issued by the Union Law Ministry. The 2023 Act was implemented from April 16 amid ongoing discussions in Parliament to amend this law and implement it in 2029.
