central Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said that Toyota Motor Corporation will introduce the flex-fuel model of Innova this month. This vehicle will be completely capable of running on E100 (100 percent ethanol). Addressing an event, Gadkari said that India needs to become self-reliant in the energy sector, as the prices of fossil fuels have increased significantly due to the conflict in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine war. He also claimed that by next year at least 35-40 percent of the cars sold in the country will be electric.
Green hydrogen is the fuel of the future
The Union Minister said that green hydrogen is the fuel of the future and India can become a net exporter of clean hydrogen. Last month, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had notified amendments to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. Under this, flex-fuel vehicles running on E100 fuel have been approved. Vehicles with E100 fuel can run on almost pure ethanol.
Vehicles running on E20 or normal petrol will not be able to use E85 or E100 fuel.
A senior official of the Road Transport Ministry said that fuel above E20 (petrol mixed with 20 percent ethanol) and up to E100 can be used only in those vehicles which have been designed and certified for it. This system will not apply to other vehicles. Vehicles running on E20 or regular gasoline cannot use E85 or E100 fuel.
Maruti Suzuki introduced the country’s first flex fuel car
The Ministry has made changes in certain limits of vehicle categories, fuel specifications and technical references used in emission tables and testing provisions. Additionally, the government has increased the maximum weight limit for light petrol and diesel vehicles affected by these changes from 3000 kg to 3500 kg. In June this year, Maruti Suzuki India had introduced the country’s first flex-fuel passenger car. The company introduced a flex-fuel model of the Wagon R, which can run on ethanol fuel ranging from E20 to E100.
