Center The government laid the foundation stone for the country’s first port-based e-methanol plant at Kandla, Gujarat in its bid to decarbonise the maritime transport sector. An investment of Rs 2,300 crore will be made on this ambitious project. This green fuel plant, a joint venture between Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APCL), will have a capacity of 150 tonnes per day. This plant will provide clean fuel to international merchant ships plying on the Asia-Europe trade route.
Rs 1,200 crore will be invested in the first phase of the project
This plant will be established in the form of expandable modules in a phased manner. The first phase of the project will add 50 tonnes of production capacity per day with an investment of Rs 1,200 crore and is targeted to be completed by January 2027. After this, in the second phase, additional capacity of 100 tonnes per day will be added with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore, which is targeted to be completed by March 2027. In this way the total investment will be Rs 2,300 crore.
Foundation stone of the plant laid on Saturday
Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said that India is strengthening its position among the major maritime powers of the world and now the country will move towards running global ships on green energy. Sonowal was addressing a program organized to mark the laying of the foundation stone of the country’s first port-based e-manol plant at DPA, Kandla, from Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
E-manol will be made from carbon dioxide obtained from renewable energy, water and biological sources.
According to an official statement, this plant with a capacity of 150 tonnes per day will produce e-methane using renewable energy, water and carbon dioxide (biogenic CO2) obtained from biological sources. On this occasion, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma mentioned Assam’s historical role in India’s oil and petroleum sector and the state’s growing contribution in the field of green energy. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present during the program.

According to a statement issued by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office, this project is also an important milestone in the industrial expansion of the state and reflects the growing potential of Assam’s public enterprises in the emerging green economy.
