Will banks open or remain closed on Sunday, September 27? There is confusion among customers regarding this question. On one hand, the Central Government has directed Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to open on Sunday. At the same time, an organization of bank officers has appealed to its members not to come to work on Sunday. In such a situation, the extent to which normal banking services will be available in the branches may depend on the presence of employees.

Let us tell you that this decision of the Central Government was taken after the meeting held on September 21. In the meeting, officials of Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Indian Banks Association (IBA) and NABARD along with Finance Ministry officials discussed banking services. Actually, a three-day nationwide bank strike is proposed from 28th to 30th September. Before this, weekend holidays are falling on 26th and 27th September. In such a situation, if banks had remained closed even on 27th September, customers could have faced problems in regular banking services for several consecutive days. For this reason, a decision has been taken to provide banking services on Sunday.

RBI also approved opening of banks

Apart from bank branches, permission has also been given to open bank offices, ATM related offices and currency chests on 27th September. Its purpose is to settle important banking work before the strike and not to keep customers away from services for long. However, there is a catch here. All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) has requested its members not to report for duty on Sunday. The organization says that under the Industrial Disputes Act, September 27 is considered a holiday.

Proposed bank strike from 28th to 30th September

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and other bank unions have proposed a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. This will be the second major action after the one-day bank strike on September 11. The major demands of the unions include implementation of the five-day banking system. Apart from this, demands like amendments related to pension and changes in DA and pension schemes of some employees have also been raised.

What should customers do?

How smoothly bank branch services will actually be on September 27 may depend on the presence of employees. Therefore, customers who have important branch related work can try to complete it in advance. At the same time, ATM, UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and other digital services are expected to be available normally. However, whether a particular bank’s service is affected or not will depend on its operational arrangements.
