Goa The opposition accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the ruling BJP of trying to influence the upcoming elections through the SIR of the voter list. The opposition made allegations and demanded withdrawal of this process. However, the Election Commission has now given clarification on these allegations of the opposition. “For 97 cases not included in the final voter list released in February 2026, BLOs completed the door-to-door process of filling Form 6 separately. The names of many of these people have already been included in the list, while the remaining cases are still under process. It is reiterated that no name of any eligible voter will be left out,” the Election Commission said in a statement.

Election Commission has become a part of BJP: Congress
In fact, the opposition parties had mentioned the reports in which Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had expressed concern over the issues related to removal of names of many places including Goa under SIR. The parties said that this was like rigging the elections. Goa Pradesh Congress Committee working president Sunil Kavthankar said in Panaji that BJP is trying to win elections through SIR because it knows that it will be difficult for the party to return to power in states like Goa. He said, “Removing the names of genuine voters is like rigging the elections. The Election Commission of India has become an arm of the BJP, which they are using to win the elections.” The Congress leader demanded that the SIR process be withdrawn. He said, “BJP is scared of the support Congress is getting across the country, that is why they are trying to win the elections through such tactics.”
The entire process of SIR should be cancelled: GFP
In another press conference, Goa Forward Party (GFP) president Vijay Sardesai demanded that the names of all voters removed from the voter list be immediately restored, except those who have died. He claimed that during this process, 1.8 lakh voters were removed from the list. Elections in Goa are won by very narrow margins, sometimes less than 100 votes. Sardesai said that in such circumstances, deletion of voters’ names could lead to wrong results in the 2027 elections. He said that since the elections are around the corner and the Election Commission does not have time to repeat the SIR process, the best way is to cancel the entire process.
SIR weakens the powers of election officials: AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also demanded action against the CEC and alleged that the SIR process has weakened the authority of grassroots election officials. AAP Goa president Valmiki Naik said, “First our lands were being snatched away, now our votes are also being snatched away.” He said the Goa case could be “just a small part of a bigger problem”. He alleged that voters who did not support BJP could be targeted by removing their names from the voter list.
