Adani Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), has commissioned a 1,000 megawatt (MW) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between Kudus and Aarey. This is an important step of the company towards strengthening the power infrastructure in Mumbai and the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This project includes 30 km overhead line and 50 km underground corridor. It has been designed to work within the rigors of a densely populated urban environment. It also has the world’s first compact HVDC substation.
The idea of this project came after the power cut in 2020.
The idea of this project came after the power cut in Mumbai in October 2020. That cut exposed the weaknesses of the city’s power supply. This project represents a major effort to increase the strength and reliability of the grid. In fact, this link helps Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to draw more power from outside the city, including renewable energy generated in other areas. Mumbai is already connected to the National Grid, but this HVDC link further improves this connectivity. This helps make power flows more controlled, more efficient and more efficient, especially when integrating renewable energy.
Mumbai gets modern power corridor
Mumbai Metropolitan Region is one of the urban areas in India where electricity consumption is highest. Kandarp Patel, CEO, Adani Energy Solutions Limited, said, “With the commencement of the Aarey-Kuds transmission line, Mumbai now has a modern power corridor capable of integrating renewable energy at large scale with high reliability. This is one of the fastest HVDC projects ever commissioned, powered by advanced VSC-based HVDC technology. This is an important step towards a cleaner and more robust energy future for Mumbai. It’s a step.”
