There is extreme heat throughout India from April to September-October. It is very difficult to live without AC these days. In such a situation, if there is any fault in the AC then life becomes difficult. Many times, if there are minor problems in the AC, the mechanic advises you to buy a new AC. Especially after there is a fault in the cooling coil, the mechanic asks you to buy a new AC. Should you buy a new AC in this situation?
Follow the 50% rule
If you have to take a quick decision in case of any problem in the AC, then you should adopt the 50% rule, that is, if the repairing cost of the AC is coming between 40 to 50 percent, then it is better to buy a new AC. In Split AC, cooling coils are installed in both indoor and outdoor units. If there is leakage in the cooling coil of any unit, then it costs a lot to repair it. However, it also depends on the age of the AC.
Generally, repairing cooling coil leakage costs you Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500. At the same time, changing the cooling coil can cost up to Rs 10,000. In window AC, this cost is around Rs 8,000. Apart from this, gas refilling cost comes to around Rs 3,000. In this way your total expenditure comes to Rs 13,000.
When to buy a new AC?
If your AC is 5 years old or more, then there is no benefit in changing the cooling coil. In such a situation, you should buy a new AC because apart from the cooling coil, other components of the AC like PCB and compressor also become old. At the same time, if the AC is new then it is beneficial to get the cooling coil repaired.
Many times small leakage can be fixed without changing the cooling coil. In such a situation, your expenses may come down even further. At the same time, if the AC is repeatedly breaking down and there is a problem of gas leakage, then it is better for you to buy a new AC.
If there is any problem with the AC, then get it repaired from an authorized service center only. If the AC is under warranty, your repair and replacement expenses can be saved. Trusting a local mechanic may also cause loss to you.
