XPRIZE Executive Chairman Peter H Diamandis has shared a post on X, in which he told that Sundar Pichai has recently said that setting up a data center in space has now become a new normal. Musk had mentioned this only a decade ago. Responding to this, Musk wrote “True”. According to this post, after Elon Musk, now Sundar Pichai is also in favor of setting up an AI data center in space.
What is space based data center?
Sundar Pichai and Elon Musk are thinking of building a data center in space considering the needs of AI in the future. These data centers will be placed in the Earth’s orbit so that they get continuous electricity from the sun’s rays. Not only this, much electricity will not be required to cool the data center installed in space because the temperature at the height at which it will be installed is very low, due to which the data center will always remain cool. This can also save water used in the data center.
Both Elon Musk and Sundar Pichai are in favor of space data centers. Pichai mentioned this during an interview with Fox News. These days Google is working on quantum computing. For this, there will be a need to set up a data center in space. These data centers can be placed close to the Sun. According to the report, the first step for this can be taken next year. Elon Musk’s company Starlink has already launched thousands of satellites into space.
