The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the qualification rules for the return of cricket at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. ICC and IOC have together made it clear how teams will be selected to play cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28). Along with this, a special Olympic qualifier tournament will also be organized for the first time to give the teams one last chance.
Matches will be played in T20 format
The real thrill of cricket will be seen in the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles, America in 2028. All the matches of this historic tournament will be played in T20 format. Only 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams from around the world will get a chance to play in this Olympics. The best part is that it is sure to have teams from different continents like Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania. This means that cricket fans from every corner of the world will be able to watch their favorite teams compete for Olympic medals.
Indian women’s team qualifies for 2028 Olympics
Let us tell you that based on the results of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the places of the first 4 women’s teams for the Olympics have been confirmed. According to its rules, one best performing team each from four different regions (continents) of the world has been selected. In this way, the teams of India from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England (Great Britain) from Europe and South Africa from Africa have directly qualified for the Olympics. The remaining teams will be decided through qualifiers.
America may get direct entry
Being the host, America’s men’s and women’s teams can get direct entry for the cricket tournament in the Olympics, but there is a small condition for this. They will have to be among the top 15 teams in the world in the ICC T20 rankings between 30 June 2026 and 31 December 2026. If American teams do not finish in the top 15 during this period, they will not get direct entry and that spot will be given to the second-best team in the rankings.
There are special rules for the qualification of West Indies
West Indies is not a single country, rather it is a joint team made up of many small Caribbean countries. Since only a team from one country can participate in the Olympics, no team in the name of West Indies will be able to play in the Olympics. A special rule has been made for this. If the West Indies team remains among the top 8 teams in the world till 31 December 2026, then a separate tournament will be organized among all these Caribbean countries. Only the country that wins this tournament will be selected to play in the ‘Olympic Qualifier’ matches in future.
The final place will be decided through qualifiers
The first 5 teams to participate in the Olympics will be decided on the basis of ICC men’s ranking and performance in the current tournaments. But to select the sixth and last team, a special ‘ICC Olympic Qualifier’ tournament will be organized in the year 2027. A total of 8 teams will participate in this tournament and only the team that wins it will get the last ticket to play in the Olympics.
