The government has taken a big step towards promoting electric vehicles (EV) in Delhi. The Delhi Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved the New Delhi EV Policy 2026. The government proposes that after the approval of the Lieutenant Governor, this policy will come into effect from July 1, 2026 and will remain effective till March 31, 2030. Under the new policy, those purchasing electric vehicles will get tax exemption, subsidy and other facilities. The government claims that the entire benefit of about Rs 15,000 crore will go to the people and the EV sector in the next four years.
Delhi will be made EV capital
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said in the press conference that the main objective of the new EV policy is to make Delhi a pollution-free and clean transportation capital. The government wants more and more people to adopt electric vehicles instead of petrol-diesel vehicles, which will reduce air pollution and also reduce the expenditure on fuel. With this aim in mind, a plan has been prepared to make Delhi the EV capital of the country.
EV buyers will get great facilities
Under the new policy, 100 percent exemption in road tax and registration fees will be given on all electric vehicles. This benefit will be available on vehicles with ex-showroom price up to Rs 30 lakh for four-wheelers. The government believes that this will give a big boost to the purchase of electric cars.
There will be a benefit of ₹15,000 crore in four years
According to the government, direct government investment of more than Rs 7,000 crore will be made in the next four years. Apart from this, the entire benefit of about Rs 15,000 crore including tax exemption, charging infrastructure and other facilities is expected to be given to the citizens and the EV industry. This will increase investment, create new employment opportunities and strengthen the electric vehicle ecosystem.
Government work will also be completely digital
Delhi government has also emphasized on administrative reforms. Government work is being made fast, transparent and digital through e-office system. Till now 235 departments have been connected to this system. More than 1.4 lakh e-files, more than 9.2 lakh e-receipts and more than 15 thousand active users are using this platform. This is ensuring real time tracking of files, faster disposal and better accountability.
