The Indian team started the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan with a bang, winning the first match played at the Dharamshala stadium by 7 wickets. Due to rain, the match between the two teams started much later than the scheduled time in which 25-25 overs were played. Team India included two new players Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey in its playing 11 for the first match, in which both of them did such a special feat by taking 3-3 wickets in their first match of international cricket that they became a special list in the history of ODI cricket.
This feat was done by a full member team only for the third time in ODI.
It is very rare that two players get a chance to debut in a match in international cricket and both of them are bowlers. With Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey taking 3-3 wickets in their debut match, they became only the third pair among full member teams in ODI history who have managed to take at least three or more wickets while debuting in the same match. Earlier in the year 1971, in the month of January, Ashley Mallett and Keith Stackpole got a chance to debut for Australia in the match against England in which both of them took 3-3 wickets. Apart from this, in the year 1997, Colin Croft and Joel Garner made their debut for West Indies in the ODI match against Pakistan and took 3 wickets each. If we look at full members and associate countries together, this has been seen only for the 7th time in ODI.
Gurnoor impressed everyone with his pace and length in his very first over.
Gurnoor Brar, a more than 6 feet tall fast bowler who plays for Punjab in domestic cricket, was staking claim for his place in Team India for a long time. When Gurnoor got a chance to debut in the first ODI against Afghanistan, he took the wicket of Ibrahim Zadran on his 5th ball. Gurnoor’s speed was seen to be more than 140 kilometers per hour, after which he can become a trump card for Team India in bowling keeping in mind the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
