ECI’s protocol became the reason? Election Commission’s clarification on the meeting of MPs under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi

Leaders of INDIA block demonstrated in Delhi on Tuesday against SIR and Election Commission. Many leaders of opposition parties set out to march from Parliament Street towards the Election Commission headquarters, but were stopped by Delhi Police from proceeding further. After this, the opposition leaders sat on a dharna near Akashvani Bhawan. Late in the evening, Delhi Police along with Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Many Congress MPs detained. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has issued a press note.

Information received from Delhi Police at 4 pm

The Election Commission said, “Today, during the march of some political parties towards the Election Commission, it was revealed through the media that some MPs wanted to meet the Commission with their delegation. In connection with today’s developments, the Commission would like to clarify that till 4 pm today, no political party had sought time for a meeting with the Election Commission through its representatives. After this, at around 4 pm, information was received from Delhi Police that a delegation of MPs led by Honorable Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi would meet the Commission. Wants to meet and submit a memorandum.”

The Election Commission further explained, “The Election Commission of India had prescribed a procedure for meetings with political parties in the year 2025. This information has been given to all the political parties and they follow the same procedure. Whenever a delegation of a political party or a joint delegation of several parties wants to meet the Commission, it seeks an appointment with the Commission through its duly authorized representative. After this, the meeting takes place at a time mutually agreed upon by both the parties. Is.”

There was a proposal for a meeting in the Parliament House Annexe.

The Commission said, “When the Election Commission, after 4 pm on Tuesday, was considering the above meeting proposal of the Hon’ble MPs, they were informed by the DCP of Delhi Police that the meeting being sought was to be held with a group of 240 MPs and the proposed venue of the meeting was Parliament House ‘Annex’. The Election Commission considered that this request is unusual and cannot be accepted, as as per protocol such meetings take place only in the premises of the Election Commission of India.

The Election Commission said, “ECI proposed that the most senior serving officer of the Commission could be sent to the meeting venue to take the memorandum of the Hon’ble MPs, which in itself would have been an unprecedented step. However, this request was also rejected by the Hon’ble MPs. The ECI respects the parliamentary and democratic processes of the country, and also respects its own protocols and traditions, which are of utmost importance. Any political party, at any time, can request to meet the Election Commission. And the Commission can decide the date and time of their meeting as per convenience.
