These days a new storm has arisen in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference leader and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made a sensational claim that he has been offered ₹200 crore to break his MLAs. The reality of this claim and the political implications behind it were discussed in detail in India TV’s program ‘Coffee on Kurukshetra’. In this show, senior journalist Pradeep Singh, senior journalist Manoj Kumar Singh and India TV Political Editor Devendra Parashar were present as guests along with anchor and India TV Senior Executive Editor Saurav Sharma.
Omar Abdullah alleges that a senior BJP leader, who is also a Supreme Court lawyer, tried to buy his MLAs. In response, BJP has sent a legal notice of defamation to Omar Abdullah demanding a written apology within seven days, otherwise it has warned of filing a case against him for ₹ 100 crore.
status of jammu kashmir assembly
In the current assembly, National Conference has 42 MLAs and Congress has 6 MLAs, which are above the majority mark (46). Experts raised the question that when Omar’s government is stable, why would the BJP take the risk of forming the government by spending ₹200 crore and roping in 17 additional MLAs? ‘Chronology’ and international narrative behind the allegations Experts believe that there could be many deep reasons behind these allegations of Omar Abdullah.
Possible reasons for Omar Abdullah’s allegations
Attracting international attention: At a time when there are massive protests against Pakistan in PoJK, Omar Abdullah’s allegation of instability in Kashmir and overthrow of the government could be a deliberate strategy. This is an attempt to send a message to the international community that the situation in Kashmir is also not normal.
Pressure for full statehood: Omar Abdullah is continuously pressurizing the central government to grant full statehood. He believes that because the police and administration are not in his hands, he is feeling ‘powerless’ as the Chief Minister.
Distracting attention from development work: According to sources, the Omar government is being accused of hanging files and delaying development works. His own MLAs and ministers are said to be dissatisfied with his working style.
Administrative Challenges and Security Questions: The central government has promised to grant full statehood at the appropriate time, but in view of recent terrorist incidents (such as the Pahalgam attack), this is not considered to be the ‘appropriate time’. Experts said that until the security situation is completely stabilized, handing over control of police and administration to local politicians could be risky.
Battle for Muslim votes within the opposition alliance in UP
In the second part of the program, the politics of Uttar Pradesh was discussed, where a tussle has started between Congress and Samajwadi Party regarding Muslim votes. Congress MP Imran Masood launched a scathing attack on Akhilesh Yadav and said that Samajwadi Party does not like ‘speaking Muslims’. Masood claimed that the minority of the country is now looking towards Rahul Gandhi. Citing the examples of Atiq Ahmed, Mukhtar Ansari and Azam Khan, he raised questions on the role of SP. In response, Samajwadi Party leaders described themselves as real well-wishers of Muslims and said that their leaders (Mulayam Singh and Akhilesh) were given names like ‘Mullah Mulayam’ or ‘Akiluddin’ by the BJP, which is a proof of their dedication. Experts believe that this political tussle can prove beneficial for BJP, because a situation of polarization is being created within the opposition itself.
Overall, be it Omar Abdullah’s allegations in Kashmir or the tussle between Congress and SP in UP, both the situations are indicating major changes in the country’s politics in the coming times. While efforts are being made to set an international narrative in Kashmir, a new war has broken out in UP regarding Muslim leadership.
