New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will take a major decision on the matters of rebellion in Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) before the beginning of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. Both the parties have demanded disqualification of their rebel MPs under the anti-defection law. Let us tell you that the monsoon session of Parliament will start from 20th July and continue till 13th August.

Chairman started the process of discussion

According to sources, the Lok Sabha Speaker has met the delegation led by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee and the group that broke away from the party and listened to them. A similar procedure was adopted in the case of Shiv Sena (UBT). According to sources, discussions are going on between the legal and constitutional experts of the Parliament. To ensure a legally sound decision, the expert group is also closely studying the previous decisions and precedents taken by Presiding Officers (Speakers) in similar cases. On the basis of these suggestions, the Speaker will give his final decision before July 20.

Apart from rebel groups Trinamool and Shiv Sena (UBT), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has also requested Congress to arrange separate sitting. The Congress has joined hands with Chief Minister C.Joseph Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), breaking the decades-old alliance in Tamil Nadu.

20 TMC MPs left the party

A total of 29 MPs were elected on Trinamool ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Of these, 20 MPs have left the party and joined the registered but unrecognized ‘Nationalist Citizens Party of India’ (NCPI) based in Howrah, West Bengal, and have demanded separate sitting arrangements. Expressing support for the Modi government, the rebel group has also expressed its desire to join the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). A Trinamool MP had passed away some time ago and that seat is still vacant.

6 Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs join Shinde faction

In the case of Shiv Sena (UBT), six of the nine MPs elected on the party ticket have announced to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Both Trinamool and Shiv Sena (UBT) have argued before the Lok Sabha Speaker that their rebel MPs should be disqualified under the anti-defection law. Both parties say that under the anti-defection law, exemption from disqualification can be obtained only if two-thirds of the total party members leave together.
