Odisha: Office Superintendent of Bhadrak Income Tax Office caught red handed taking bribe by CBI, arrested

Bhadrak: A senior official has been caught red-handed by the CBI on charges of taking bribe in the Income Tax Department office of Bhadrak, Odisha. The accused has been identified as Ramesh Kumar Mahanty, Office Superintendent of Income Tax Office, Bhadrak. After receiving the complaint, CBI laid a trap and arrested him.

What is the whole matter?

According to the information, the complainant had told the CBI that a duplicate PAN card was registered in his name and he was in contact with the Income Tax Department to get it canceled or deleted. It is alleged that in return for doing this work, Office Superintendent Ramesh Kumar Mahanti had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from him.

After receiving the complaint, CBI took the matter seriously and registered a case against the accused officer on June 3, 2026. The case was registered under RC number RC 04(A)/2026-BBS.

During the preliminary investigation, CBI got information that the accused officer had agreed to accept bribe amount from the complainant. After this the Bhubaneswar team of CBI planned a special trap operation.

As per the plan, the complainant was sent to the accused officer with the prescribed amount. On June 3, 2026, as soon as Ramesh Kumar Mahanti accepted a bribe of Rs 4,000 from the complainant, the already present CBI team caught him red-handed on the spot.

CBI officials immediately took the accused into custody. Bribe amount was also recovered during the action. Officials say that further legal action is being taken against the accused under provisions related to corruption.

After this action of CBI, there was a stir in the Income Tax Department office located in Bhadrak. This action is considered important as part of the campaign being run against bribery in government departments.

At present, the accused officer has been kept under the surveillance of CBI and further investigation of the case is going on. During the investigation, it will also be found out whether the accused had shown involvement in such activities earlier also and whether any other person has any role in this case.

CBI has said that a detailed investigation of the case is going on and further legal procedure will be adopted after the completion of the investigation. (Report- Shubham Kumar from Odisha)
