The scorching heat continues in many states of North and Central India and the mercury was recorded above 40 degrees at many places. There was severe hailstorm in Lasar area of Rafiabad and surrounding villages of Baramulla, causing huge damage to orchards and standing crops. The storm, which was accompanied by heavy rains, badly damaged apple orchards and other agricultural fields. Many parts of Himachal Pradesh got respite from the scorching heat after rain and strong winds while Rohtang Pass and surrounding areas of Kullu district received fresh snowfall on Friday. The local meteorological center has issued a ‘yellow alert’ on Saturday for strong winds accompanied by thunderstorms in five districts – Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla.
Severe heat wave will prevail in many states
The IMD said on Friday that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions may persist over the plains of north-western India, central and eastern India and parts of Peninsular India during the next six to seven days. Mahesh Palawat of weather forecasting service Skymet Weather told PTI that pre-monsoon activities are expected to start from the beginning of June, which may provide some relief to the people. The temperature in Rajasthan is likely to rise again by 2-3 degrees Celsius from May 24 and there is a possibility of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions at some places in the state.
Banda was the hottest city in Uttar Pradesh, where the mercury reached 46.4 degrees Celsius. After this, the maximum temperature in Prayagraj was recorded at 46.2 degrees Celsius. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, conditions ranging from heat wave to severe heat wave may occur at some places during the day. Due to the impact of the new western disturbance, heavy rains are expected over southern parts of Kerala on Saturday, and ‘Orange’ alert has been issued in one district and ‘Yellow’ alert in six other districts. IMD has issued ‘Orange’ alert in coastal district of Alappuzha. The weather department has issued a ‘yellow’ alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts of the state. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain and heavy rain along with thunderstorms and strong winds over various parts of Kerala till May 27. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over some parts of Kerala between May 28 and June 3.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the mountainous areas. These areas may experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kilometers per hour. According to IMD, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at some places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh.
There is a possibility of storm with heavy rain and thunder in North Bengal. According to this, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur districts of North Bengal till May 26, in which torrential rain may occur at one or two places.
More than 15 districts in Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius. Heat wave conditions may prevail in coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, but there may be rain at some isolated places on Saturday. According to IMD, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in many hilly districts of Uttarakhand on Saturday.
Flood in Arunachal Pradesh
Flash flood caused by heavy rains has caused huge devastation in Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. According to officials, several important bridges were washed away, houses were damaged and connectivity in many villages was disrupted due to the floods. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued an advisory appealing to people to avoid going into rivers for fishing or other activities as further rain is predicted. According to officials, the washed away bridges included the RCC bridge at Nyo Koro near Ningping village and another bridge connecting Giba headquarters to Longte village.
