4 new judges will be appointed
In fact, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 5 approved the proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament. It aims to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court of India from the present 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India) by amending the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. Members of the legal fraternity have widely welcomed it and described it as a timely step to deal with the increasing pendency of cases and litigation before the Supreme Court.
Advocates welcomed
President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, senior advocate Vikas Singh said that due to the ever increasing number of cases filed in the Supreme Court, there was a long standing demand to increase the number of judges. He said that although the rate of disposal of cases by the Supreme Court judges has been commendable, there is a need for more judges in view of the huge number of cases. He also stressed the need for infrastructure and expressed hope that a part of the new Supreme Court building would be operational by the end of this year. According to him, the court can comfortably accommodate 38 judges and around 50 judges may be required in the coming years after the entire new building is commissioned.
