New rules for refund on ticket cancellation will come into effect from April 1, 2026. Under the new rules, passengers will now have to cancel tickets 8 hours before the departure time of the train. If a passenger is negligent or delays in canceling the ticket, he is sure to suffer huge losses. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had recently said about the new rules that if a passenger does not cancel the ticket at least 8 hours before the departure time of the train, then he will not get a refund of even a single rupee. That is, now of course you have booked tickets in upper class for your entire family, if you do not book the ticket before 8 hours then you will not get a refund of even a single rupee. Let us tell you that under the old rules of refund on ticket cancellation, passengers had to cancel the ticket at least 4 hours before the departure time of the train to get a refund.
What else is there for you in the new rules
Under the new rules, if you cancel your ticket 8-24 hours before the departure time of the train, you will get a 50 percent refund and 50 percent will be deducted. If a railway passenger cancels the ticket 24-72 hours before the departure time of the train, he will get 75 percent refund and 25 percent will be deducted. Similarly, if a passenger cancels the ticket more than 72 hours before the departure time of the train, he will get 100 percent refund and no deduction will be made. Keep in mind that in case of refund, you will have to pay the same cancellation charge as before.
