Vikram Bhatt kept telling ghostly stories in jail for 70 days, was about to face death, told the painful story himself

Vikram Bhatt, considered the master of horror and thriller films, has written and directed more than 70 films in his career. A successful director, producer and writer, Vikram has also given many superhit films whose songs have created a lot of buzz. But even at this point of success, Vikram had to spend 70 days in jail. Here he used to tell ghostly stories to the prisoners for 70 days and once he even had a chance to die. Now recently Vikram has remembered those difficult days.

Vikram became emotional remembering the bad days of jail

In conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Vikram has recalled the most difficult phase of his life. Bhatt told that he was kept with about 60 to 80 prisoners where he got a lot of love from other prisoners. Vikram says, ‘I was living in a barrack with 60 to 80 people. But I saw a different India there. I learned what true friendship means. They didn’t let me do anything. They would bring me food and take care of my clothes. They used to call me Bhishma Pitamah. They would say, ‘Grandfather, just sit here and tell us a scary story.’ Every night, about 60 to 65 people would gather and ask me to tell stories.’ Vikram further said that ‘even when my health was bad, the constables and jail officials were very helpful. The people who couldn’t be expected to be kind actually turned out to be the kindest. I made some friends there who will stay with me for life because they risked their lives to protect me. Two people slept on either side of me. No one could harm me. And I didn’t do anything for them. What he saw in me and why he cared so much about me, only God knows.

Bhatt also spoke about the serious health problems he faced during his imprisonment. The filmmaker revealed that he suffers from an autoimmune disease called Axial Spondyloarthritis, which causes pain in his joints and muscles. The harsh cold and inadequate sleeping arrangements inside the jail further deteriorated his health. Vikram says, ‘I almost died in jail. I have an autoimmune disease. There is pain in my joints and muscles, and I have to sleep on a mat spread on the floor. It was the month of December and January, and it was bitterly cold. I had also developed jaundice and I kept asking the authorities repeatedly to take me to the hospital. At night I used to get such high fever due to cold that the people in my barrack would give me their blankets. Still I kept trembling. I asked the officials to take me to the hospital. They would say, ‘tomorrow’ or ‘the day after’. My fellow prisoners would also tell them that I was very ill. But he said they did not have enough guards and needed security arrangements. Then I thought they would never recruit me. So I started doing what I had done when I had jaundice before. I completely stopped eating oily food and survived on gram, water and fruits. Slowly I started recovering. Because of this experience, I prayed a lot and became deeply connected to God.

Why did you go to jail?

Vikram Bhatt was arrested by Rajasthan Police in December 2025 and had to stay in Udaipur jail for about 70 days. The case is related to India IF owner Dr. Ajay Murdia. Vikram Bhatt and his wife had reportedly taken Rs 30 crore from Dr Ajay for making a biography on the life of his late wife Indira. After which he was cheated in this promise and a complaint was lodged with the police. After this Vikram Bhatt had to stay in Udaipur jail for 70 days.
