Nepal Issuing a fresh statement, it said that no restriction has been imposed on the import of Indian mangoes and entry of the fruit has been allowed in the markets of Nepal as per the demand and keeping in mind some rules. The clarification comes days after Nepal officials said the government had limited the import of Indian mangoes containing high levels of pesticides due to the lack of quarantine facilities in the border areas, especially in Madhesh province.
Nepal’s Agriculture Ministry had issued a statement on Wednesday
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment said in a statement issued on Wednesday that there is no ban on the import of mangoes from India. The ‘Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre’ under the ministry said that the matter came to its attention after news of the ban on Indian mangoes appeared on different media and social media platforms. The ministry said it has not imposed any restrictions on the import of mangoes from India. Under some rules, entry of these fruits has been allowed in the markets of Nepal on the basis of demand.
Indian mango consignment was stopped in Madhesh province
Let us tell you that a few days ago, a large consignment of mangoes coming from India was stopped at the Bhittamod ‘Quarantine’ check post in Madhesh province due to the fear of harmful insects in the fruits. However, the consignment has now been released after the ‘Plant Health Certificate’ was issued by Indian authorities, said Manish Kumar Pal, spokesman for the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperation of Madhesh province.
Nepal’s business associations had expressed concern over Nepal’s move.
According to newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’, Bhuvaneshwar Purbe, general secretary of the Fruit and Vegetable Traders Association in Janakpurdham in Madhesh province, had earlier said that stopping the import of Indian mangoes could lead to a shortage of mangoes in the domestic markets. He had advised the government to strengthen the ‘quarantine’ system and allow Indian fruits to enter Nepal markets after proper quality checks instead of imposing a complete ban.
What is there in the new rules of Nepal
Nepal’s Plant Protection Organization said in a statement issued on June 10 that the import of Indian mangoes continues as before. The organization said that mango consignments coming from India will have to follow plant health rules. Under this, mango importers from Nepal will have to show a valid phytosanitary certificate issued by the Government of India. Hot water treatment rule is very important among the new import rules by Nepal.
What is hot water treatment?
Under Hot Water Treatment, mangoes are treated with hot water before export, so that the pests, chemicals and related diseases present in the mangoes can be prevented. The Indian government has expressed concern about the new rules made by Nepal. India says that Nepal did not have any discussion with them before making the new rules. India has raised this attitude of Nepal in WTO.
The Government of India also issued a statement on Wednesday
The Indian government had also issued a statement on Wednesday terming some media reports related to ban on import of mangoes in Nepal as ‘factually incorrect and misleading’. Along with this, the government had said that the export of Indian mangoes to Nepal is continuing without any hindrance. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said that Nepal’s Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center itself clarified on June 10 that no ban has been imposed on Indian mangoes.
